Stewardship, Education & Conservation

2024: Year in Review

Your support means the world to us (and the Black Rock)!

As a conservation and education based non-profit who relies heavily upon member-donor funding, we hope you'll give us plenty of consideration when determining which of these causes to support.

Your generous contribution will go far in helping us to continue our mission to "inspire, connect, and protect" and is instrumental in helping us to achieve a more sustainable future in Black Rock Country and beyond.

2024 Stewardship Projects

In 2024, Friends of Black Rock and our dedicated team of volunteers engaged in 10 Site-Stewardship Projects throughout the Black Rock National Conservation area, including the Black Rock Desert Playa, the Micro-playas, Steven's Camp in High Rock Canyon, Little High Rock Canyon, the Calico Wilderness area, Black Rock Point and Hot Springs, Double-Hot Hot Springs, and anywhere else we saw trash or fire-rings in need of removal.

In total, this accounted for 110 volunteers providing over 560 volunteer hours serving over 450 acres of our public lands!

2024 Community Events

Black Rock Rendezvous, now in its third decade, provided us an early season opportunity to gather over the Memorial Day Weekend for a multi-day campout with our partners at the Bureau of Land Management and Friends of Nevada Wilderness. This year's event featured a Dutch oven cook-off, recreational opportunities, site stewardship projects, plant tours, and educational programming related to the extraordinary animals, geology, hydrology, and history of the Black Rock.

Located at the iconic Stevens Campground, north of High-Rock Canyon, National Trails Day 2024 was a unique opportunity to travel deep within the NCA, and to spend a weekend helping to improve our public lands, surrounded by natural beauty and our wonderful community of volunteers.

Our annual Perseids Meteor Shower Campout is our favorite way to celebrate the dark skies of the Black Rock. This year featured telescope viewing, a night-sky talk, scorpion searching, night bike-rides, a stewardship event, a member appreciation dinner, and many wonderful moments shared among friends.

With stewardship projects taking place all-day Saturday, including preservation of the public-use cabin, fence removal, fire-pit placement and campground maintenance, National Public Lands Day provides an opportunity to roll your sleeves up and do your part to improve our public lands, amongst the backdrop of scenic Soldier Meadows.

We offered three Rides With Friends events, which in turn offered bicyclists the opportunity to ride in what can sometimes be a pretty daunting region, and to do so with the assistance of an experienced guide and a community of other riders.

2024 Guided Tours

A new addition to our programming schedule in 2024, our guided tours and events require a Special Recreation Permit through the BLM which allows us to provide ticketed events to the growing number of visitors interested in recreating in and learning more about our beloved Black Rock. These included hikes up to Black Rock Point, Old Razorback, and Steamboat Rock, guided bike rides to the Granites, along Guru Road, and across playa, a gem and mineral vehicle-tour, and an overnight campout at Fly Ranch.

2024 Fly Ranch Tours

For those interested in visiting this iconic Nevada landmark, Friends of Black Rock, in partnership with Fly Ranch, remains your best opportunity to not just visit and photograph this unique hydrogeological feature, but to learn all about the region's ecology and history.

Thank you all for a wonderful 2024, and we look forward to seeing you in Black Rock Country in 2025!

With Gratitude,

~FBRHR
