WINNEMUCCA, NV – In recent days, numerous people have flown and driven to the Black Rock playa to see the 747 art car following the route used to move the 747 onto private land after the 2018 Burning Man event.

“The public should be aware that the plane is sitting on private land and not BLM managed lands,” said Black Rock Field Manager Mark Hall. “The route through the dune field is an unauthorized route that violates the Congressional Act that banned the creation of new roads and routes when the Black Rock-High rock NCA was created.”

A temporary route was created to move the 747 off of public lands after the 2018 event was authorized under a permit issued by the BLM. While there is no regulation against landing a plane or driving a car on the playa, there should be no motorized vehicles operating in the National Conservation Area unless they are on official BLM routes or County Roads.

This fall and winter the BLM needs to get out there and restore the dune field and remove all traces of the route, added Hall.
