National Public Lands Day in the Black Rock Desert

FBRHR Field Team / Jonathan (AmeriCorps) and Dan / Summer 2020

Volunteer with Friends of Black Rock High Rock for NATIONAL PUBLIC LANDS DAY in 2020 as we partner with Friends of Nevada WildernessNevada Outdoor School, and the BLM – Nevada.

When: September 26th 2020 (day trip, no camp-out)
Time: Meet 8:30 a.m. (PST) 
Meet: Black Rock Ranger Station 200 Transfer Road, Gerlach, NV 89412 (then caravan to Project Site)

Volunteers in small groups (1 lead, 1 follow, with 8 volunteers) will caravan in your own vehicle, to one of these Project Sites – be sure everyone in your vehicle is signed up for the same site (cannot join other carpools):

  1. Coyote Dunes Fence Repair
  2. Coyote Dunes Interpretive Sign Replacement
  3. “Mormon Dunes” Mormon Dan Restoration and Site Repair
  4. “Mormon Dunes” Mormon Dan Restoration and Site Repair 
  5. Black Rock Desert Cadastral Marker Fencing 

You are responsible for getting yourself to and from Black Rock Station (BLM) at the edge of Gerlach, NV. Volunteers must travel in YOUR own VEHICLE from Gerlach to the field project site.

Volunteers are expected to bring all the water, meals, snacks and shelter (tent/blankets/camp-gear) you will need for your visit. While we won’t be camping as a group, public lands are open and you’re allowed to camp on your own. Plan ahead.

PACK A LUNCH and plenty of snacks for the day. Keep in mind, the closest grocery store is in Fernley, Reno/Sparks, Winnemucca or Cedarville (about 100 miles from Gerlach). The Empire Store has closed. Businesses in Gerlach are open at this time.

CARRY WATER with you at all times, such as a canteen or water bottle. Bring at least 1.5 gallons per person per day, bring more than you think you’ll need, stay hydrated!

CARRY A MASK, and be prepared to wear your mask at all times, including while working or standing outdoors.

Kids joining you to volunteer in the field (not going to Kids Camp)? Be sure to sign them up for the same Project site as you, or the vehicle they are traveling in, on the sign up sheet below. Field Teams are capped at 10 (ten) on a project.
