Dear Friend,
Preceded by a blustery October, we're now enjoying a beautiful Indian Summer in Black Rock Country. An incredible display of fall colors can still be found for the adventurous, while hunting season continues with a fair abundance of chukar. For current conditions visit our website.

Sensitive Land Acquisition
The Nevada Land Conservancy is nominating 720 acres of privately owned in-holdings within the Black Rock NCA for acquisition by the BLM through the Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act (SNPLMA). These lands include parts of Double Hot Spring, Casey Spring, and Little High Rock Canyon, and would be merged into the existing NCA resource management plan should the acquisition move forward. If you would like to express an opinion on the nomination to the SNPLMA acquisitions team before November 20, you can send your letter to:
Acquisitions Team (NV-055) SNPLMA Division, Bureau of Land Management 4701 Torrey Pines Drive Las Vegas, NV 89130

Friends Groups to Convene in Santa Fe
Next weekend, several Friends board and staff members will attend the 2nd Annual National Conservation System Foundation Foundation (NCSF) Rendezvous in Santa Fe, New Mexico. This conference is a way for Friends groups of other NCAs and National Monuments to get together and compare notes, share ideas, and receive advanced training. This year, FBRHR Executive Director Matthew Ebert will give a brief presentation on our Coyote Spring Dunes restoration project, specifically how funds from various sources were used to accomplish a project from our strategic plan. |
Nevada Day Fanfare
Friends attended the Nevada Day Parade last weekend-- our final outreach event for 2009. The weather was fantastic, and the parade was its usual display of marching bands, classic cars, and funky floats. Sam Bauman and Guy Farmer from the Nevada Appeal stopped by, and we had an opportunity to talk with the Eagle Valley Muzzleloaders about a possible demonstration at the Black Rock Rendezvous in the spring! A big thanks to Carol Montgomery and Debbie Smith for coming out to help. |
Fall Winter Newsletter
Our Fall/Winter newsletter is now complete and has been sent to all members in good standing. If you are a member and did not receive a newsletter, please contact us at info@blackrockdesert.org and we will get one to you promptly. You can also see the articles (without the pretty pictures) and make comments on our website.
As a side note, Nevada Wildlife Magazine has picked up the opinion piece written by Will Roger, FBRHR Board President, that highlights his concerns over wild horse management. The article will be published in their November Issue, coming out soon. It's a contentious issue and we welcome your comments.

Vounteers: Final Project Outcomes for 2009
Thank you all so much! We would not be able to accomplish any of these important projects without our amazing team of volunteers!
Here are the final numbers for 2009: 169 Volunteers worked on 24 projects (9 direct service & 15 outreach projects) for a total of 2173 hours. These volunteers drove a combined total of 27,117 miles, for an in-kind mileage donation totaling $3796.38 (at non-profit rate of $0.14 per mile).
Yeah, statistics; yadda, yadda. They cannot possibly express what you did, the real value of what you contributed to Friends, and how much we appreciate it. We wish we could list every single name in this newsletter! You know who you are, and we know who you are. We are tentatively planning a volunteer appreciation dinner, slated for early December in Reno. All volunteers will be receiving an invitation. If you have volunteered and are not sure if you are on our email list, please contact volunteer@blackrockdesert.org
Thank you again, you truly are Friends of the Black Rock/High Rock! |
