Dear Friend,
Summer has arrived, with 90 degree days, warmer nights, swamp coolers pumping, vehicles overheating, sunscreen slathering, and increased visitation to the Black Rock Desert. Even so, we still hear people say that they spent their whole weekend out on the Emigrant Trail and didn't see another soul. Mostly people camp on the playa, and over Fourth of July many people made the classic mistake of driving in the dunes below Garrett Ranch aka Frog Pond. Gigantic RVs and regular 4WD trucks got stuck. Take heed: the dunes are off limits to prevent damage to sensitive areas and keep people from spending hours or days digging out their stuff. An ounce of prevention beats a pound of mud on each shoe.
There was one bad injury over the weekend, with few details except the helicopter was needed, and so a reminder to play safe and drive sober out on the playa. One bad accident quickly ends the warm fuzzy feelings of freedom you just had, and possibly could deprive you of feeling anything but pain and remorse. Please don't become the next Black Rock Desert statistic.
As for driving fast, the North American Eagle folks are out on the playa, and rumor has it they want to get in a couple of runs. Conditions are bumpy and far from ideal, but they may well run the car, so we'll try to get some pictures or video.
