Burning Man has drawn to a close, and out here in Gerlach everyone is shaking out the dust and getting back to the regular rhythm of life. The Visitor Contact Trailer was at Burning Man for the first time ever, as part of the interpretive camp "Where Dreams Collide" in cooperation with Nevada Outdoor School, Desert Research Institute, Washoe County Parks, the Great Basin Institute, and the Bureau of Land Management. We had on average 300 visitors to the camp each day of the event, with about 5 volunteers per day helping to run the exhibits and pass out the new Black Rock NCA Visitor''s Guide and map. The exhibit was a great success, thanks to the efforts of these volunteers. Now, on to September's activities!

National Public Lands Day, September 19 - 21, 2008
Join
us in protecting our public lands in the Black Rock Desert NCA. This
year's projects include clean up of recreation sites around the playa,
removal of expired claim stakes in the Calico Mountains and clean-up of
two abandoned mine sites in the Pahute wilderness. There will be a
potluck dinner on Saturday and an educational day hike on Sunday.
This is a great opportunity to give back to the public lands we all love, and to get into a particularly scenic area of the Black Rock Desert you might not get to see otherwise. For more details about the project and how to be prepared, please visit our website.
Or, please contact Justin Robbins at BLM, 775-623-1704

Double Hot Fence Project, Oct. 18 - 19, 2008
We are seeking volunteers to help former board member and longtime OCTA member Terry Hardwicke to build fence around Double Hot Springs. Volunteers may wish to work Saturday (Oct 18) or Sunday (Oct 19) or perhaps camp over night and participate both days. Terry has dug six test holes and in each case the soil is loam, no rocks and not compacted, as digging goes it's easy.
For more information or to RSVP, please contact Terry Hardwicke at 775-851-0227.
