Our Mission
|
The Friends of Black Rock High Rock is a 501(c)(3) organization which helps manage the resources of the Black Rock Desert region and educates the public to foster stewardship and preserve its unique character.

It's Burning Man time out in the Black Rock Desert, and things are getting busy here. We just completed a successful Emigrant Experience tour led by Chuck Dodd, with 23 people participating over both weekends. Going through High Rock Canyon is definitely a deeply touching and remarkable experience. The Guru Road project earlier last month was also remarkable, with 9 volunteers working to preserve this unique art installation just outside of Gerlach. And now it's August, with plenty of outreach planned for the Friends of Black Rock High Rock.

Lake of the Sky Festival
 Come join Friends at North Tahoe Regional Park in Tahoe Vista on Sat., Aug. 9th. starting at 10:00 am. Cool off in Tahoe with a day of
great music, arts, eco-education,
the Friends' mini-playa and more!
All ages welcome, friendly leashed
dogs are permitted, coolers & chairs are cool, no outside alcohol or glass,
$10 pay on site parking available, bike or walk free, no overnight camping, no
fires.
We can use a few volunteers, too.

Perseids Meteor Shower Camp Out, Aug. 12-17
Come on out for one of our favorite events of the year, the Annual Perseids Meteor Shower Camp Out, next week from Tuesday, August 12 - Saturday, August 17.
The peak of the shower is Tuesday, the moon will be waxing to full on Saturday, and there will be plenty to see and do all week. Self-sufficient, LNT camping with some day trips planned to area hot springs and a special hike into Fly Canyon with Rick Brown. There will be a graduation ceremony for the AmeriCorps members from Friends and the Nevada Outdoor School on Tuesday.
The precise camp location has yet to be determined, and will be posted at the Visitor Contact Trailer and the Friends office in Gerlach on Tuesday. Basically, you will go 6 miles north-east from the 12 mile desert entrance, then turn east for 3 miles. Location may vary some depending on playa conditions. Look for the Friends' giant green army tent. Be sure to come prepared for camping with plenty of food and water, and a spare tire. Bring telescope. Star Charts will be available for purchase on site.

Visitor Center at Burning Man! The Friends of Black Rock are responsible for running the mobile Visitor Center from April through October, and this year it will be open on-site in Black Rock City! The Visitor Center will be located in center camp on the ring road at 1:15 next to the Earth Guardians camp.
We are looking for some volunteers who are planning to attend Burning Man in 2008. We need to staff up a few four hour shifts with burners who know and love this desert. It's basically handing out maps, answering questions about the desert, pointing to the big map on the wall inside, and/or telling stories.

Photo Contest - DEADLINE EXTENDED
We have extended the deadline for photo submissions for the 2009 Friends of Black Rock calendar to SEPTEMBER 1, 2008. Do you have a stellar photo that deserves recognition? The Friends of Black Rock / High Rock will be producing our first-ever calendar for 2009 and we're seeking 14 spectacular images of the NCA and surrounding areas. The winning shot will grace the cover and the winner will receive a Black Hoodie and a lifetime membership.
We're seeking images that are unique and demonstrate the diversity of landforms, habitats and uses within the region. Submit entries for consideration to margie@blackrockdesert.org or call 530-581-2620.
