Friends,
March turned out to be a great start to the season, and I think April will be even better! We ended up securing access to Fly Geyser on the Hot Spring tour after all, and the owner of the Great Boiling Spring, Dave Jamieson, was around to tell the group about how John C. Fremont happened to first come there. We also had a great time at our Spring Kickoff in Sparks, and worked with Friends of Nevada Wilderness and the Nevada Outdoor School at Soldier Meadows Hot Springs, helping to protect the threatened desert dace. We also opened the Visitor Contact Trailer in Gerlach earlier than ever! So now, let's see what's in store for April. |
Friends of Black Rock seeking board members
As a board member of the Friends of Black Rock High Rock, you can help to insure that the Black Rock Desert remains a jewel of public lands in Northern Nevada. Board members set Friends' mission and goals, provide oversight, and help to promote our mission to the public.
We need to fill two board positions which are becoming vacant, and two more positions are also available. Ballots with the pending candidates and bylaws changes will be sent to members on April 24, and the results will be announced at the General Member Meeting on May 24 at the Black Rock Rendezvous. For a synopsis of the responsibilities of a board member, please go to our online Board Book and review the "Board Responsibilties" documents. Contact Matthew Ebert at 775-557-2900 if you would like to be considered, or for more information. |
Visitor Contact Trailer
The "VCT" is one of Friends' most important projects. We manage this facility for the BLM, and it now sits in Gerlach near the Water Tower Park. We train volunteers to answer questions and distribute information about the Black Rock Desert, the better to educate the public and visitors about the hazards and resources of the region. To volunteer, contact Mike Black at (775) 557-2900. |
Earth Day 2008
Marking an exciting new partnership, Friends will be bringing the "VCT" to Cabela's in Reno on Saturday, April 19, to reach out to a different segment of the public. Then we will be in Idlewild Park for Reno Earth Day on Sunday, April 20, and at Squaw Valley for Tahoe/Truckee Earth Day on Saturday, April 26. There is a chance we will be at the UNR Student Union for April 22. Come on out and pay us a visit, or go here if you're interested in helping us reach out to the public and promote our projects. |
Membership Drive
Membership dues are an important part of how we are able to expand our programs and reach the public. While we are always looking to expand our membership, it is very important that we do so this year. Our goal is to increase from 196 members to 750 by the end of the year. So far this year, 66 people have either joined our renewed their membership. To those new and enduring members, thank you!
If you are not yet a member of FBRHR please go here and become a member today.
If you are already a member, we'd like your help bringing in some new Friends. For every member in good standing who recruits 5 memberships of any type, we would like to offer you a limited edition Friends of Black Rock hooded sweatshirt. These pullover "hoodies" have our logo on the front and a topo map image of Black Rock on the back. They are very popular, but so far only available to special volunteers. Just send the names of your recruited members to info@blackrockdesert.org, and indicate your desired size (M - XXL). We will confirm the new members and send the sweatshirt to you right away. |
House to vote on NCA permanence
The "crown jewels of our public lands" will get another chance at
permanent recognition this week. On Wed., April 9, the House votes on the bill HR 2016. This would officially enact the National Landscape Conservation System,
a collection of some 800 national monuments, wilderness areas, scenic
rivers, and historic trails which includes the Black Rock Desert. The Conservation System was designated seven years ago, but without further
support there is no guarantee that the System will be around in another
seven years. Only Congress can permanently establish the Conservation
System as the last great network of American protected lands. To contact your representative in support of the bill, please go here today. |
| Thank again for your interest and support of this spectacular region.
