Dear Matthew,
The year has gotten off to a good start-- the weather has been cold and windy with the playa covered partly in snow, but we have still kept the fires stoked and have been working to improve and enhance our activities in 2008. For a breakdown of our 2007 activities, click here.
It all starts Saturday, March 22 with the Spring Kick-off Party at Great Basin Brewery in Sparks. We will be recognizing the efforts of some very special volunteers, conducting an NCA quiz show, promoting our events, and giving away lots of stuff. Come meet people who share your passion for the Black Rock Desert region. More details to come.

Fly Geyser Update
The Friends of Black Rock has proposed a schedule of tours in 2008 to the owners of the Fly Geyser. Fly Geyser visits are part of a larger tour offering conducted by Friends board member and Sierra Club trip leader David Book. We have yet to confirm access to the property, but remain optimistic that we will be able to help interested members experience this Nevada marvel. Other events for 2008, including the Emigrant Experience Tour with Chuck Dodd, have been posted on our calendar. Photo by Bill Kozitsky

Black Rock Radio? Stay Tuned.
On January 22, 2008, FBRHR received a construction permit from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for a non-commercial educational radio station in Gerlach. This is a very exciting project and will demand increased involvement from volunteers and members. The next steps include seeking grants for equipment and finding skilled participants to plot the future course and programming of the project. There are already plans to build a tower and build a studio facility. If you are interested or have something to contribute, please contact the Friends office at 775-557-2900. You can monitor the progress online.

Thanks to you...
Your membership and donations are a big part of how we are able to continue our mission. It is important that we continue to educate the public about the values of the Black Rock Desert region if we are to protect the area from damage and abuse as visitation increases. And, for those who love the area, we hope to help bring you to a more complete appreciation of the many wonders that lie beyond the sage and alkali. Click here to show your support. |
