To Whom It May Concern:

I am writing this letter to request your support of the Friends of Black Rock High Rock. We are a nonprofit organization committed to preserving the unique character of the Black Rock Desert - High Rock Canyon Emigrant Trails National Conservation Area in the northwest corner of Nevada, 110 miles north of Reno. The Black Rock Desert is home to a variety of uses, including ranching, amateur rocketry, the world land speed record, and the popular counter culture event Burning Man. It is also a destination for hunters seeking bighorn sheep, antelope, sage hen, chukar, and other game. Perhaps most significantly, it has the largest undeveloped stretch of historic Emigrant Trails in the United States-almost one third of cross-land gold seekers in 1849 followed the Applegate Lassen Trail, hoping to find a short cut to gold country. Campers and visitors from around the world come to experience a landscape identical to the one seen by these Emigrants, and they can imagine the hardships endured while these explorers sculpted out a new existence for themselves, and created a new America.

With increased visitation to the Black Rock Desert come new challenges. We work with the Bureau of Land Management and other agencies and organizations to ensure that visitors come to the region well informed and able to avoid causing damage or getting into trouble. We help to strike a balance between uses when they are in conflict, and promote the enhancement of recreational opportunities in concert with the preservation of natural resources. We provide visitor services in Gerlach, conduct tours and events, maintain radio communication infrastructure, and produce publications that promote education and understanding. All of these programs are not possible without financial support, and your gift is an important part of our success. Any donation you make, or the value of any gift made to Friends for fundraising purposes, is completely tax-deductible. We are proud to announce all gifts through our email newsletter to over 2000 people, and in our biannual newsletter with a circulation of 1500. Furthermore, significant sponsorship of one of our events or programs will be promoted in print ads to the greater Reno/Carson area. Thank you for your consideration, and we look forward to your support of the Friends of Black Rock High Rock.

Sincerely,

Matthew J. Ebert, Executive Director
