The U.S. Bureau of Land Management has acquired nearly 1,300 acres
of land around the Black Rock Desert National Conservation Area
north of Reno.
The agency purchased the property from private land owners for an
undisclosed sum, using money from public land sales in southern
Nevada.
The purchase covers land in the Little High Rock Canyon, Poodle
Mountain and Hardin City areas.
BLM officials said the acquisition would help protect landscapes
along the Applegate-Lassen Trail traversed by thousands of covered-wagon
pioneers in the 19th century. The acquisition was made with the
help of the Nevada Land Conservancy.
The federal Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act authorizes
money from public land sales around Las Vegas to be used for purchases
of sensitive land in Nevada.
