[RGJ] Rancher, advocates want horse sactuary in northern Washoe County

A Nevada rancher and a wild horse advocacy group have proposed creating a mustang sanctuary in the desert hills 160 miles north of Reno and have asked the Bureau of Land Management to release 1,700 captive horses into the sanctuarys care.

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management has acquired nearly 1,300 acres
of land around the Black Rock Desert National Conservation Area
north of Reno.

The agency purchased the property from private land owners for an
undisclosed sum, using money from public land sales in southern
Nevada.

The purchase covers land in the Little High Rock Canyon, Poodle
Mountain and Hardin City areas.

BLM officials said the acquisition would help protect landscapes

"A deal heralded as a conservation coup and a big plus for Northern Nevada's wildlife has put 23 square miles of privately owned range into the public's hands.

The Home Camp Ranch, in the far northwest corner of Washoe County about 170 miles north of Reno, was sold by the Jaksick family to the U.S. Bureau of Land Management in a $5.8 million transaction funded by the sale of federal land near Las Vegas.
