EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Are you a strategic leader ready to shape the future of a nationally recognized public service organization? The Alaska Geographic Association is seeking an Executive Director to lead this vibrant, mission-driven association connecting people to Alaska’s public lands, parks, forests, and refuges.

Organization Overview

In 1959, a nonprofit was founded to serve the educational needs of Mount McKinley National Park. Today, the Alaska Geographic Association operates more than 30 bookstores in association with five government agencies managing 15 national parks, 16 national wildlife refuges, America’s two largest national forests, and dozens of other public lands across 500,000 square miles of public lands in Alaska.

Through the operation of these stores and the creation of interpretive materials and educational programs, the Alaska Geographic Association pursues its mission of connecting people with Alaska’s public lands through a combination of collaborative public partnerships, generating more than $4 million in earned income, encouraging private memberships and maintaining positive ties with the tourism industry.

AKGEO is an innovative nonprofit association that creates and distributes award-winning books, films, and educational experiences for those interested in learning more about Alaska’s geography and natural history. AKGEO’s products inspire people to connect with public lands through exploration, stewardship and volunteerism. AKGEO is nationally recognized for excellence by such organizations as the Association for Partners of Public Lands and the National Association for Interpretation.

Position Overview

The AKGEO Executive Director (ED) is an entrepreneurial business manager who is responsible for AKGEO’s financial health and viability. The ED responds to rapid changes in the marketplace and works collaboratively with staff to meet the needs of their agency partners and bookstore customers. The ED exhibits strong management skills and passion for AKGEO’s mission to connect people with public lands; develops staff and fosters a collaborative, team environment; and maintains positive and collaborative relationship with the Board of Directors.

Position Requirements

Successful attributes include demonstration of (a) creative, forward-thinking and vision-driven leadership; (b) retail sales and marketing including product conception and design; (c) public lands knowledge and experience; (d) transitioning products and programs from traditional media to electronic and digital formats; (e) strong written and verbal communication skills, as well as presentation skills; (f) effective staff management; (g) positive Board relations; (h) strategic planning and analysis; (i) sound business and financial management; (j) computer literacy and familiarity with standard business software. ; (k) collaboration with state and federal agencies; (l) and fund raising and grants administration skills.

Experience/Education

This position requires 5+ years in a leadership position with progressive responsibilities, and a proven track record of entrepreneurial success, including sales and marketing. Experience in or with other public land management partner organizations in Alaska is preferred. Master’s Degree is desired. Travel within the State of Alaska is required. Salary competitive with for-profit sector.
