100107 Education Committee meeting

The education committee needs to meet to set the work plan for 2010. How does this Thursday, January 7, at 6 pm sound to everyone? Please RSVP ASAP with your availability.

From a regular phone, call #1-605-475-8515, Enter Conference Room Number : 5211261

I have included the whole board in this message in case anyone would like to join this committee. The following is my preliminary proposition for our 2010 activities, and also can serve as a draft agenda:

I. Brochure series – 15 minutes
Per Dave Hays, the planned brochure series does not have to be full-on BLM style formatting ala the Soldier Meadows and High Rock Canyon brochures. We can include a BLM logo to relate our partnership, and have the content reviewed by the BLM just like with our newsletter. This is good news— it will make it much easier to actually accomplish this.
what topics we want the brochures to cover;
how many different brochures;
how many OF each brochure to print;
who will create the content /photos for each brochure;
how much does it cost, how to pay for it.

Work has already moved forward on a “survive” brochure. Larry Johnson from Nevada Bighorns has expressed interest in helping with a wildlife brochure. Other ideas include targeting interests (hot springs, rock hounds, suggested ATV routes, Emigrant Trails).

II. Outreach – 10 minutes
Next, we need to look at the other outreach and educating activities in 2010. Cabela’s, REI, Earth Day(s), Jackpot of Gems, X Night, other ideas?

III. Billboard – 15 minutes
FBRHR has received $3000 towards a billboard on I-80. This idea came out of a board meeting, and I went ahead and moved on it, and it happened. I have budgeted an additional $2000 towards this project. We need to decide what message we want to put on this, and how it will fit in with the website and other education/marketing efforts. My suggestion is to use the same Steve Chandler photograph from our member brochure, with our slogan: “When the pavement ends, the experience begins. Protect. Respect. SURVIVE.” Then our logo with the blackrockdesert.org address.

IV. FM – 10 minutes
I am spending about 10 hours per week on the logistics of building this thing. I need help working to put together programming, or at least guidelines to what programming will look like. This could happen before we know it, I’d prefer to have some ideas worked up in advance.

V. Rendezvous – 10 minutes
This Committee has oversight of all tours and workshops offered at the Rendezvous. Crow, Margie and I already attended a meeting with NOS and FNW to talk about logistics. A discussion about our plans is required.

Thank you for your attention and I look forward to hearing from you.
