Communications Director, Friends of Black Rock/High Rock

Offices in Reno and Gerlach, Nevada

(Part-time, approximately 2 days/week)

Position Objectives:

Friends of Black Rock/High Rock is looking for a Part-time, tech savvy person to increase our visibility on Social Media, do public relations for our organization including writing press releases, working at public events such as trade shows and similar events, and publicizing our organization in general and specialized media. We are a Land Stewardship/Outdoor oriented organization based in Gerlach, Nevada, with a Reno office too. This position may be based in either location but will require coordination with the other office.

Web site responsibilities will include: updating events and recreation information, updating a monthly calendar of events in the Black Rock Desert-High Rock Canyon Emigrant Trails National Conservation Area, and monitoring web site forums, site visits, and other feedback. Additionally, this person will support recreation opportunities by contributing to education and outreach programs for school and community groups. Activities may include delivering public talks, updating event information on our website, and coordinating community events for such occasions as trade shows and similar public events.

Location: Position may be based in Reno or Gerlach but will require some travel between the two. Gerlach is a very small, remote Northern Nevada town at the south end of the Black Rock Desert High Rock Canyon Emigrant Trails National Conservation Area. Terrain is typical of the Great Basin and Black Rock Desert, with wide long valleys bordered by mountain ranges. Field conditions include hot, arid days with high exposure to the sun, and potentially cold, damp winter weather. Resources include big game habitat, Wilderness Study Areas, active grazing allotments, abandoned mine lands, historic and prehistoric cultural sites, and wild horse management areas.

Qualifications:

* Bachelor's degree is preferred but not required;

* Non-profit experience preferred;

* Experience working with governmental entities preferred;

* Experience creating, designing, and/or maintaining websites very desirable;

* Experience coordinating community events;

* Experience developing and/or facilitating education and outreach programming for natural and/or cultural resources;

* Ability to communicate effectively, both written and orally, to diverse audiences;

* Knowledge of Microsoft Office products and Photoshop Elements 10;

* Experience using Dreamweaver CS5.5 or similar products desirable;

* Willingness to work collaboratively in a team setting as well as independently;

* Possess a clean, valid, state-issued driver's license.

* Fundraising/Grant writing skills very desirable
