Recent thunderstorms

Last Saturday afternoon, May 30th, the Black Rock Desert received some direct hits from a series of thunderstorms. Here is Sunday's satellite pic, taken at noon

The bright blue ellipse immediately north of Trego is a small lake. Lighter and darker shades of blue indicate a wet surface. A large thunderstorm is developing over the Granite Mountains on the left edge.

This is an infrared image taken from the Terra satellite; these daily pictures are available at rapidfire.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov. Look in the upper-right corner of the 250m imagery for northwestern Nevada / northeastern California. Use the "7 2 1" image of infrared bands to see water and moisture represented in blue.
