2nd Annual Sulphur to Black Rock Bicycle Race
This event will take place as part of the 2011 Black Rock Rendezvous in the Black Rock Desert on Sunday, May 29, 2011. Riders will meet at 8 am at the main camp of the Rendezvous, about 3.5 miles north of the 12 mile desert entrance from Rte 34 along the west track playa road, near Cassidy Mine. Bicycles can be transported via trailer to the start line at Sulphur, and travel to the start line will take about 45 minutes. Alternately, riders can meet the group at Sulphur around 9:15 am. There will be a short ceremony at the start line before we begin the race at around 10 am. Riders will sign a liability and photo release form and provide emergency information. We will have an opportunity to gawk at some enormous mining trucks from Hycroft Mine and to learn about the history of the ghost town at Sulphur. Then everyone will line up and start at the gun. The course runs about 7 miles south along the Union Pacific Railroad tracks until they meet the Applegate - Lassen Emigrant Trail, and then turns west to follow the Emigrant Trail for an additional 10.7 miles, crossing the Quinn River, and ending at the Black Rock Hot Spring. Great Basin Brewing Company will provide a selection of microbrews at the finish line. A chase vehicle will make sure that all participants complete the course, and amateur radios will be used for communications and in case of emergencies. The 2011 Flyer is available for download below.
