2013 Volunteer Events CalendarVolunteer Events 2013 Note: Arrival to camp is on a Friday, in most occasions work that begins on Saturdays will be completed that day or will wrap up after breakfast on Sunday. Generally, we leave camp Sunday after lunch. Cars will leave Reno Friday, times TBD as we get closer to the date. Scheduled dates may change. Volunteer hours, performance, humor and cooking awards, will be celebrated at the year-end Winter Celebration in December! Sign up and JOIN IN! Contact Michael Myers: m.myers@blackrockdesert.org Friday, April 12: Sulphur City Clean-up: located on Jungo Road close to the Hycroft Mine. Old rusted cars and loose metal has been evaluated and are not deemed historically significant. Cleaning up the land is part of what Friends does and it's definitely spring cleaning at Sulphur. Better than good tires needed to reach the site. Need a ride or would like to join the caravan? Contact Michael< see above. Sunday, April 21: Earth Day, Reno. 4 people needed. Friday, May 3: Wild & Scenic Film Festival and Donor Reception- Friends will present a collection of inspiring films at The Grove following a donor reception sponsored by the Board of Directors. Volunteers are needed from 4pm-10pm. A stellar evening is to be enjoyed by all! 10 people needed. Fri-Sun, May 24 - 26: Rendezvous at Black Rock Desert Engage with area scientists and specialists on wildlife, flora and the places you love in the Black Rock Desert and High Rock Canyon. Tours will be given of the Hot Springs, High Rock Canyon, Soldier Meadows and more. Nevada Outdoors School will host the kids camp. Bring your culinary wiles to the pot luck dinner. Spread your blanket by the fire and listen to Altered Ego as the full moon rises. BYO tent or trailer for camping. Camp location is at the base of Cassidy Mine, enter at the 12-mile lake bed entrance and floow the signs. 10 people needed- cooks, trip co-leaders, camp set-up and break-down. Fri-Sun, June 1: National Trail Days- Friends begins this unique trail project at historic Steven's Camp. The trailhead and restoration of two camp sites, clearing brush and removing invasive species frames the weekend work. Portions of the Emigrant Trail is in the creek and are magnificently nestled in aspens. Delicious meals provided. 10 people needed. Fri-Sun, June 15 - 16: Solder Meadows water flow channels has overgrowth choking up smooth water flows causing overflow. The green sun fish, likes to feast on desert dace and threatens their habitat. Field scientists will be on this trip. Waders or Wellies are needed. This is the perfect place for a family experience and camping weekend! Delicious meals provided. 10 people needed. Thur-Sun, June 27 - July 7: Fourth of July: Coyote Dunes maintenance; Trego Hot Springs Cleanup- continuation from PLD'12, Harbin City Cleanup and a “Thank you, so much” New Member/Donor Playa Dinner Celebration with historic movies. 18 people needed within the 10 days, not all at once, teams of 6 are perfect! Fri, August 9-12: A unique year to experience Perseid. One conservation project and geo-tours will be available. 2 people needed. Wed, August 21: Set up Encampment at Burning Man- Camp Theme to be determined but think....sustainability in remote places! 6 people needed. Sun, Sept 1: Breakdown Burning Man Camp- saying good-bye to yet another year of Burning Man fun. 6 people needed. Fri-Sun, Sept 21- 22: National Public Lands Days - projects yet to be determined. Family event, camping, amazing food, pot luck and games! 12 people needed.
