Mission Statement The Friends of Black Rock High Rock is a 501(c)(3) organization which helps manage the resources of the Black Rock Desert region, and educates the public to foster stewardship and preserve its unique character. Overview The primary responsibility of the Board of Directors Friends of the Black Rock/High Rock is to lead the organization toward achievement of its mission by providing visionary policy-making and creative direction. The Board works closely with the Executive Director, other Board Members, outside consultants, staff, and volunteers to develop and implement strategies for short and long term planning, resource development and fund raising, grant making, programming, finance, administration, special events and public relations. Selection Criteria FBR/HR Board Members must: o Be capable of and willing to provide advisory expertise in one or more of the following areas of responsibility: legal, marketing, development, fundraising. o Agree to disclose any possible conflicts of interest and will not offer or accept favors or gifts to or from anyone who does business with or receives payment from FBR/HR except as allowed by Board policy. o Agree to read and become familiar with the Boards bylaws and financial reports and fulfill the legal and fiduciary responsibilities of the Board. o Be able to identify board members, staff, volunteers, donors and grant recipients who could make unique contributions to the Friends of the Black Rock/High Rock mission. Responsibilities o Make a three-year commitment to membership on the FBR/HR Board. o Work throughout the year to enhance the communitys awareness of the FBR/HR and its programs. o Attend board meetings and the Annual Members Meeting. o Board meetings are 4 times per year for approximately 3 hours, as needed. o Board members must commit to attending at least 3 meetings per year. o Serve in leadership positions or undertake special assignments on Board committees and task forces. o Committee and task force work usually occurs for a period of three to four months per year. o During this time, a commitment of up to ten hours per month may be necessary. o Provide effective fund raising support. o Make a personal annual donation to the FBR/HR according to their personal means. o Solicit donations from their professional and personal networks. o Contribute to an annual assessment of the Boards own performance.
