The 2015 Artist-in-Residence program was opened up to all media types. Applications ranged from photographers to painters to sculptors to literary artists to a textile artist. Painter Lewis Williams and textile artist Virginia Catherall were selected for the 2015 program.

Virginia completed her residency in late May, and Lewis completed his during late June. During Virginia’s time in the Black Rock Desert, she was able to present to our Black Rock Rendezvous participants over Memorial Day weekend. She was also able to lead two field trips with our local school students.

During Lewis’ residency, he was able to host two sessions with our local seniors. Everyone in Gerlach really appreciated the time they got to spend with our two artists.

In 2015, there was an opening reception at the Gerlach Community Center followed by a two week exhibit at the Sierra Arts Foundation gallery in Reno. Attendees at both receptions were awed by the knitted creations of Virginia and Lewis’ paintings. In 2015, both artists resided out of state. So, Lewis, from Montrose, CO was able to attend the Opening Reception in Gerlach, and Virginia, from Salt Lake City, UT was able to attend the closing reception in Reno.
