2014 Artist-in-Residence Program

August 2014 410

Judy Hilbish describing her artistic process at the Gerlach reception.

In 2014, Friends of Black Rock-High Rock hosted inaugural Artist-in-Residence program in the Black Rock Desert NCA. The selection process was limited to two dimensional media. Photographer Stephen Chandler and painter Judy Hilbish were the selected artists for 2014. Both of them completed their residencies in late May and early June.

At the completion of their residencies, we hosted two Artist-in-Residence receptions. The first was a reception at the BLM’s Black Rock Field Station in Gerlach. Judy and Stephen were able to attend both receptions. We held a silent auction to auction off other artwork that was created during their residencies. They were also able to share with the audience the process they go through to create their artwork. It was a unique glimpse inside the craft of the the artists.

The second was a joint reception with Red Rock Canyon Interpretive Association at the Liberty Fine Arts Gallery in Reno. In 2014, Red Rock Canyon Interpretive Association also hosted their first Artist-in-Residence program. These two programs were the first of their kind on BLM managed lands in Nevada. This exhibition of 5 artists from Nevada was on display for the month of October.
